Kristjaan Speakman explains decision as Sunderland talent completes loan transfer exit
Sunderland defender Timothee Pembele has joined Le Havre on loan
Sunderland defender Timothee Pembele has completed a second loan move to French outfit Le Havre, the club have confirmed.
The full-back joined the Black Cats on a permanent basis from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2023, but has struggled to make any kind of meaningful impact on the first team picture at the Stadium of Light in the period since. At the time of writing, he has registered just eight senior outings on Wearside, with the most recent coming in April 2024, and so far this season, has been restricted to a solitary National League Cup start for the U21s.
It is within this context that Pembele was permitted to leave on loan last term, and the full-back would ultimately go on to make a positive impact during a temporary stint with Le Havre. The 23-year-old racked up 21 appearances across all competitions, and made such an impression that head coach Didier Digard had spoken openly about his desire to re-sign the Sunderland outcast this month.
In a recent interview, as quoted by Foot Normand, Digard said: "He [Pembele] was a huge asset to us in the second half of the season because he managed to fill many positions and, above all, he brought a lot of energy and a positive attitude. Now, is it a feasible operation for us right now? We know that the Premier League is very complicated financially. I hope we can find a solution.”

What has been said about Sunderland’s decision to loan Timothee Pembele to Le Havre?
And Digard has finally got his wish, with Sunderland confirming on Tuesday morning that Pembele is now set for a second spell with Le Havre.
Addressing the decision to send Pembele out on loan once more, Sunderland sporting director Kristjaan Speakman said: “Opportunities have been limited for Timothée this season following our promotion to the Premier League and due to high competition and depth within our defensive ranks. This move provides him with the platform to play regularly in a familiar environment, and naturally, we wish him well for the remainder of the season.”
Speakman’s comments echo the sentiment of his statement on Pembele’s previous loan to Le Havre. Speaking in the summer of 2024 about the initial call to allow him to join the Ligue 1 club, the Black Cats transfer chief said: “Timothee’s availability last season represented an opportunity for us to acquire a player with vast potential. We moved quickly to secure his signature but understood that he needed time to recover from an injury that was preceded by another lengthy spell out of action.
“Although he hasn’t yet managed to force his way into the team, he is now fully fit and has trained consistently. The next step is for him to play regularly in a competitive senior environment, and we believe this move will allow him to do that before returning to Sunderland next summer.”
