The Black Cats sat seventh in the third tier prior to this weekend’s fixtures, but slipped to ninth following Saturday's results – which saw some surprising triumphs registered.

Sunderland still remain just two points off the play-offs and eight points away from leaders Ipswich – although that could change in Sunday’s only fixture.

But who has benefited from the five games played during the international break so far? We take a look:

Coventry 2-1 Rochdale

The high-flying Sky Blues were heavy favourites for this clash, but found themselves behind before the half hour as Ian Henderson struck.

Jordan Shipley levelled for Mark Robins’ side before the interval, before Liam Walsh netted a late winner – lifting Coventry to 3rd.

Blackpool 2-0 Wimbledon

Simon Grayson’s side leapfrogged the Black Cats – and several other sides – climb into the top four courtesy of victory over Wimbledon.

The Dons made it hard for Blackpool, though, who needed Armand Gnanduillet’s second half brace to seal the three points.

Gillingham 1-0 Lincoln City

It’s been a tough start for the Imps after gaining promotion, and they fell to another defeat at the hands of the Gills.

Ex-Sunderland striker Mikael Mandron netted the only goal of the game as Steve Evans’ side continued their good form of late.

Bolton 1-0 MK Dons

Plenty of late drama here!

After missing a late penalty, Daryl Murphy struck in added time to seal a vital win for the Wanderers.

Rotherham 1-0 Accrington Stanley
