A number of eye-catching deals were sealed as Premier League and Championship clubs looked to offload the fringe players who didn’t move when the window for the top tiers shut earlier in August.
So who have underlined their promotion credentials and who looks set for a tough few months before the January window opens? Phil Smith gives his verdict on every club's work over the summer months and where they now stand….
5. Bristol Rovers
Have strengthened their defence well. Luke Leahy is a very steady operator and Tom Davies is a smart replacement for the impressive Tom Lockyer, who left for Charlton. The big issue is that they remain too dependent on Jonson Clarke-Harris for goals and that already looks a problem. C- Photo: Alex Burstow
6. Burton Albion
They looked to be in danger of losing their late-season momentum when Marcus Harness left, but their loan replacements are looking good and some key players, such as Scott Fraser and Liam Boyce, have stayed. Will surely push for play-offs. B Photo: Clive Mason
7. Coventry City
A higher turnover than they would have liked, a consequence of talented youngsters being snapped up and a number of loans ending. They’ve lost a lot of pace and quality, but a steady start to the campaign suggests they have replaced them well enough. B Photo: Morgan Harlow
8. Doncaster Rovers
Have recovered well from a difficult period when Grant McCann and John Marquis moved on. The big issue will be goals. Kazaiah Sterling is a lively talent but has a big task to try and replace Marquis. Keeping the excellent Ben Whiteman is an enormous plus and Darren Moore could be their best signing of all.
