Enzo Le Fée apologises to Sunderland fans as Bruno Guimarães fires new social media dig after Arsenal game

Enzo Le Fée apologised after his penalty miss as Bruno Guimarães aimed another social-media dig at Sunderland fans

Enzo Le Fée issued an apology to Sunderland supporters after his missed penalty against Arsenal, while former Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimarães continued his running exchange with the Stadium of Light crowd on social media.

Sunderland pushed the champions throughout the contest but lost 2-0 after a dramatic second-half swing. Le Fée could have put Régis Le Bris’ side ahead, only for David Raya to push his penalty onto the post.

Arsenal punished that miss just two minutes later when half-time substitute Bruno struck an excellent opening goal. The Brazilian, who had been booed before the game and every time he touched the ball, celebrated by cupping his ears in front of the Sunderland supporters.

The miss came one week after Le Fée had converted a late spot-kick at Brentford, making Raya’s intervention an especially painful turning point for Sunderland on the night. Reinildo was dismissed late on before Bukayo Saka converted the resulting penalty. Sunderland created several chances during the closing stages, but Raya repeatedly denied them.

Le Fée addressed his miss on Instagram and accepted responsibility for failing to complete his task. He also looked towards Wednesday, when Sunderland will play their first European game for 53 years. “Not the result we were hoping for tonight,” Le Fée wrote. “I failed in my mission; we’ll get back to work so we’re ready for Wednesday. Sorry again, and thank you once more for your incredible support. ❤️🤍”

Bruno’s online activity struck a markedly different tone. The Arsenal midfielder shared a post featuring pictures of his goal and cupped-ears celebration, which carried the messages: “They know what they are!” and “The fat rat wishes you a nice weekend.” He added a pointing emoji to the first line and a face-with-tongue emoji to the second.

The wording referenced a chant directed at Bruno during his time as Newcastle captain. His celebration had already attracted attention after his response to the hostile reception. Bruno also reshared an Instagram story posted by his former Newcastle teammate Joelinton. It featured a picture of Bruno celebrating in Arsenal colours alongside the words: “Once a Geordie, always a Geordie!!” Joelinton tagged Bruno and added black and white heart emojis, underlining the pair’s continuing connection following the midfielder’s summer move to Arsenal.
