It’s a new week at the Stadium of Light – and one which offers something of a luxury for Sunderland head coach Lee Johnson.

Monday, 22nd March 2021, 5:19 pm

The Black Cats do not have a midweek fixture this week, giving Johnson some valuable time to work on the training ground with his side ahead of the trip to Bristol Rovers on Saturday.

Today’s SAFC round-up

FT: SUNDERLAND WIN 2-1!

Well, what an ending that was!

93 - GOOOOOAAAAALLL! SUNDERLAND LEAD!

HARRIS AGAIN!

This time Taylor crossed and the striker took a touch before firing home.

The Black Cats have turned it around!

89 - GOOOOOOAAAAAAALLL! SUNDERLAND!

The Black Cats are level!

Will Harris manages to force a shot from the edge of the box, which finds the bottom corner.

1-1!

81 - PATTERSON SAVES!

A great stop from the Sunderland ‘keeper as he springs to his right to tip away Matthews’ penalty!

80 - PENALTY TO PALACE

Brandon Taylor slides in to stop a Palace break and is adjudged to have fouled his man.

Now a penalty for the hosts.

78 - GOAL Crystal Palace

Just as Sunderland were growing into the game, Palace strike.

Jake O’Brien is left unmarked from a corner and heads home from 10 yards.

Palace 1-0 Sunderland.

65 - Greenfield with another chance

This time the trialist midfielder is teed-up by Wearne on the edge of the box, but sees his low drive parried away.

Much better from Sunderland.

A big opening for Sunderland, who are growing into this game.

Newall pings a ball down the line and a fine touch from Greenfield took him past his man and into space.

His eventual shot was wild, though, and flew over.

50 - Palace on top at the start of this half

The hosts have picked up where they left off and are putting pressure on Sunderland.

Hannan has just whipped in a cross for Wickham, but he steered his header wide.

45 - The second half is under way!

No changes for Sunderland at the break.

HT: Crystal Palace 0-0 Sunderland U23s

All square at the break.

Palace have been on top and have had a few real openings, but Sunderland have held strong.

41 - Still goalless as we approach the break

Palace are still seeing most of the ball, with Hale looking lively after returning to the field after receiving treatment.

He and Wickham are teaming-up well but Sunderland are proving a tough nut to crack so far.

30 - A couple more chances for Palace

First Wickham tries his luck from the edge of the box, but Patterson saves his half-volley fairly comfortably.

Then Matthews shoots from a similar distance but curls narrowly wide.

The hosts are getting closer...
