Brian Brobbey and Florent Ghisolfi explain Sunderland contract decision amid Bayern Munich and Manchester United transfer links

Brian Brobbey has committed his future to Sunderland until 2031 after signing a new long-term contract

Sunderland have confirmed that Brian Brobbey has signed a new contract, keeping the Netherlands international at the Stadium of Light until 2031.

The 24-year-old striker has scored 10 goals in 40 appearances across all competitions since joining the Black Cats from Ajax on September 1, 2025.

Brobbey has become an important part of Sunderland’s forward line, helping the club qualify for European competition and producing several memorable moments in red and white. Among those was his hat-trick against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium in September, which made him the first Sunderland player to score a Premier League treble since Jermain Defoe in 2016.

Having committed his future to the club, Brobbey expressed his gratitude for Sunderland’s confidence in him and outlined his determination to keep improving. Speaking after signing his new deal, Brobbey said: “I’m really happy with the confidence the club has shown in me. Since I’ve arrived, I’ve felt the ambition here, and I want to keep growing and improving as a player.

“Representing Sunderland in the Premier League is both an honour and a privilege. Having played my part in helping this club qualify for European competition is something I’m incredibly proud of. It’s an achievement that will always be part of the club’s history. I know I still can be a better version of myself, and that’s what motivates me every day. I want to score goals, help the team and give our fans something to be proud of.”

Sunderland director of football Florent Ghisolfi welcomed the agreement, describing it as a reflection of the shared belief between the club and the striker. Ghisolfi also stressed that Sunderland believe there is more to come from Brobbey, with the club aiming to help him fulfil his potential as part of a team that develops together.

Ghisolfi said: “We are delighted that Brian has committed his future to Sunderland. This agreement reflects a shared belief in what we can achieve together and a mutual commitment to keep progressing. Brian has important qualities, and we believe there is much more to come from him. Our responsibility is to support his development and challenge him every day, so he can fulfil his potential and help the team succeed.

“We want to build a team that grows together, with players who embrace the demands of this Club and take pride in representing Sunderland. Brian has an important part to play in that journey, and we look forward to continuing our work together.”

Brobbey’s new deal comes amid reported interest from Manchester United and Bayern Munich, with his performances on Wearside attracting attention beyond Sunderland. Both clubs have been linked with the Netherlands international, while Chelsea have also featured in reports surrounding his future. Securing his services until 2031 strengthens Sunderland’s negotiating position should that interest develop into formal approaches, while underlining Brobbey’s commitment to continuing his development at the Stadium of Light.
