Northern League: Improving Seaham Red Star asked for more

There is a busy weekend lying in wait across both divisions of the Ebac Northern League.

Improving Seaham Red Star have been told they must ‘take another step forward’ when they host Division Two rivals Newcastle University this weekend.

By their own admission, Mark Collingwood’s side made a slow start to the new season after winning just one of their first six games before going out of the FA Vase despite a positive performance in their narrow defeat at Division One club Marske United. However, a 1-0 home win against Grangetown Boys Club in midweek was the perfect start to four consecutive home games that can signal the start of what they will hope can be an upturn in fortunes.

A meeting with a Uni side sitting one point and two placed beneath them in the table appears to offer an opportunity for another three points - but Red Star assistant manager Michael Johnson has warned his players they will be in for a difficult test on their home patch.

He told The Echo: “We have to backup what we did in midweek after a good win and a half-decent performance. We have some good momentum but we know Newcastle University will be a tough game because it was two tough games against them last season. We’ve got to be ready to deal with that. We have got a couple of players coming back but we have to be the right Seaham Red Star because if we do everything will fall into place. It’s starting to come. We’ve had an average start of the season but midweek was a step forward and we have to take another step forward this weekend.”
