FA Vase: Horden CW boss eyes away tie after shoot-out win

Horden CW progressed into the first round proper of the FA Vase with a penalty shoot-out win at NCEL club Route One Rovers.

Horden CW manager Jonny Payne is hoping for another away day in the FA Vase first round after his side survived a penalty shoot-out in Saturday’s win at Route One Rovers.

The Marras made the trip to the Northern Counties East League Division One side looking to secure a spot in Monday’s draw and earn a spot in the first round proper for the fourth time in five seasons. Ben Henderson fired Payne’s side in front with 15 minutes on the clock but a second-half equaliser from Umar Ali Zahoor forced the tie into the lottery of a penalty shoot-out. However, Marras keeper Robert Dean showed his prowess when facing spot-kicks with three saves - and his team-mates held their nerve to claim a 4-3 win that allowed their manager to turn his focus towards Monday’s draw.

He told The Echo: “It was a bit of a hostile atmosphere for us - but we dealt with it well. We probably could have nicked it in normal time but we conceded a scrappy goal and they had a spell of around 20 minutes. But we got through, Deano saved three penalties and we did well to get through. We held our nerves and we look forward to the next round.

“I’d have another away day in the next round. I just don’t want a team in our division or the Northern League in general. I want to go outside of that and I’d look forward to that.”
