Peterborough United chief reveals transfer 'talks' over Newcastle United striker Dwight Gayle - and where he expects him to go

Gayle hasn’t started a Premier League match for Newcastle so far this season with just three substitute appearances to his name.

But the 32-year-old is expected to be made available for a loan move with an option to buy when the January transfer window opens next month, according to The Telegraph.

Gayle’s potential availability is sure to alert a number of Championship clubs after he netted 23 times for The Magpies on their way to the Championship title in 2016-17.

West Bromwich Albion, where Gayle scored 24 goals while on loan back in 2018-19, have already been credited with an interest in the forward as have Nottingham Forest.

Any option to buy is believed to be ‘dependent on promotion from the Championship’ with West Brom currently sitting fourth and Forest 16th.

Speaking to the Peterborough Telegraph, Fry admits he spoke to Newcastle about Gayle earlier this season, but expects the striker to move to Championship promotion contenders West Brom.

Fry said: “I did speak to Steve Bruce about Dwight when he was Newcastle manager earlier this season, but at that point they had so many injuries there was no chance he would be allowed to leave.

“It looks like he will leave now, but it won’t be to return to us. There’s no chance of that. It’s a lovely thought, but he’s on upwards of £50k a week and we couldn’t afford to pay him £5k. West Brom are keen on Dwight and I would expect that’s where he will end up if they can agree a deal on his wages.

“Anyway why would Dwight come back to join us in a relegation fight when he can join West Brom’s promotion push? West Brom are crying out for a goalscorer and the fans love him from his previous spell with them.”
