It’s 60 years and counting for a Sunderland school which has had changes of names but is still going strong.
Thornhill Comprehensive School was built in 1964 and it was meant to be a replacement for the existing West Park Technical School for Girls. It was built on a site which was once Thornhill Farm.
The cost of the new school’s construction was £750,000 and it was planned that 1,920 girls would get an education there but a meeting of the Education Committee that same year came up with a different plan.
It was decided that it should be a mixed school for the same number of pupils and a 60-year history began when the school opened in 1966.
We have photos from the days of construction onwards but it is your memories of the school that we want and you can share them by emailing [email protected]
