With an extra day off and the potential for some nice weather, families and groups will be looking to make the most of the additional day, but how far across the North East can they get?

Those hoping for a day out the house are in luck thanks to Nexus announcing trains will run to a usual weekday timetable, meaning trains will be available throughout the day.

Services across Monday will see trains operating as usual with the exception of additional peak trains. These services are usually put in place throughout busy periods such as midweek rush hour as well as major events such as football matches and concerts at the Stadium of Light or St James’ Park.

This is currently scheduled to be the only change to the Metro service until the Great North Run, when additional trains are expected to run throughout the day, which is often one of the busiest for the service.

Although it has not been confirmed by Nexus, it is likely the Shields Ferry will continue to carry people between North Shields and South Shields throughout Bank Holiday Monday.

Over previous Bank Holidays the service has continued to run, including the extended Bank Holiday weekend for Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee in June.

When is the August Bank Holiday Monday?

The final traditional Bank Holiday Monday of 2022 falls on Monday, August 29 this year, although it is not the final Bank Holiday of the year. Workers are still treated to two days in December on Boxing Day and Tuesday, December 27 as a substitute day for Christmas Day, which falls on a Sunday this year.

This will be the seventh Bank Holiday in England this year.
