Public transport will be running throughout the festive period this year, apart from on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.

Here are the details you need if you're heading out before and after the big day.

Tuesday, December 24 (Christmas Eve):

Nexus has confirmed that the Tyne and Wear Metro trains will run its normal weekday service on Christmas Eve.

Stagecoach and Arriva will be running on Saturday timetables on all of the bus routes. The last buses are due at around 6pm.

The majority of Go North East buses will run to normal weekday timetables.

Shields Ferry will run a normal Tuesday service finishing early. The last crossing from South Shields will be at 6.45pm, and the last one from North Shields will be due at around 7pm.

Northern Rail will run normal services with a reduced timetable after 7pm.

Thursday, December 26 (Boxing Day):

Tyne and Wear Metro trains will run to a normal weekday service on Boxing Day. Sunderland station will be open from 7.15am to 8.20pm. When closed, Metro trains will run through the station without stopping. The first Metro train to stop in the station will be at 7.34am and the last train is due at 8.17pm.

The main bus operators are expected to run some daytime services, with Nexus paying for additional services.

Stagecoach expect a limited service on Sunderland routes 3, 4, 10, 11, 13, 16, 20, 23, E2 and E6 between 10am and 6pm. A limited service on South Shields routes 3, 4, 10, 11, E2 and E6 is also expected during this time.

Go North East is running special services on Boxing Day. Their services include 2, 4, 6, 9, 10, 10A, 10B, 16A, 20, 21, 26, 27, 35A, 45, 47, 49, 49A, 53, 54, 55X, 56, 58, 60, 97, 310, M6, Q1, Q2, Q3, X1, X21, X30 and X66.

Special Arriva timetables will also apply on services 43, 52, 308, X10, X11, X16, X21 and X22.

Shields Ferry services will operate to a Sunday timetable.

There are no Northern Rail services on Boxing Day.
