Travel back in time as Sunderland landmark prepares for spectacular Civil War reenactment
Brace yourself for the Battle of Sunderland!
The city will be transported back in time to the seventeenth century as the Cavaliers and Roundheads once again wage civil war in the grounds of Hylton Castle.

In what’s set to be a spectacular event, the Sunderland landmark will once again play host to The English Civil War Society.
Visitors can expect sword fights, pistol firing and the swinging of maces on horseback as the battle reenactment sees the Royalists and Parliamentarians once again go head to head in the Civil War.
It takes place over the Bank Holiday weekend, Sunday, May 3 and Monday, May 4 from 12pm to 5pm on both days, with entry just £1.
As well as the battle reenactment, there will be face painting, heritage crafts, food and drink and historical storytelling throughout the days, with the battles taking place from 2.30pm to 3.30pm on both days.

Susan Ord, Chairperson of Hylton Castle Trust, said: “Our trustees are very excited to be able to hold another battle reenactment weekend at Hylton Castle.
“It provides such a great opportunity for local residents and visitors from wider afield to explore the castle site and Sunderland’s local heritage.
“The English Civil War Society have a number of fabulous displays organised ahead of the main battle, and there are plenty of activities around the site for families and children to take part in.
“We would like to thank Sunderland North Area Committee for funding the event and we look forward to welcoming everyone to an amazing weekend and the sunshine is booked!”
