The body of a man has been discovered in Whitburn.

The body, which was discovered on Sunday (September 20), is believed to be that of missing man Aurel, from Newcastle.

The 41-year-old was last known to be in the Shafto Street area of Scotswood at about midday on Monday, September 14.

Since then, extensive enquiries have been carried out by Northumbria Police to locate Aurel, including the release of a public appeal.

While formal identification is yet to take place, it is believed to be Aurel and his next of kin have been informed.

They are being supported by specially trained officers.

Police officers do not believe there to be any third-party involvement, and a report will now be prepared for the coroner.

Detective Inspector Nick Went, of Northumbria Police’s Missing Investigation Team, said: “Our thoughts are firmly with Aurel’s loved ones at this extremely difficult time.

“I’d like to thank the officers involved in the searches, our partner agencies for their assistance and those in the community who shared information with us.”

“As is standard practice, a report into Aurel’s death will now be prepared for the coroner. We'd like to request the family's privacy is respected at this time."
