Sunderland pub pays tribute to staff member Samuel Campbell after alleged Silksworth murder

Emergency services were called to Park Avenue in Silksworth after receiving reports that an assault had taken place at an address shortly after 1am.

Upon arrival, paramedics and police found 24-year-old Sam Campbell with injuries consistent with a stabbing and despite efforts to save his life, he tragically died at the scene – prompting officers to launch a murder investigation.

Sam worked as a bar staff member at Gatsby on Derwent Street in Sunderland city centre – with his employer paying tribute to the “exemplary member of the team” in a social media post following his death.

The Facebook post said: “It is with sincere regret we inform you that one of our own is no longer with us.

“Sam was taken from us in the early hours of Friday morning.

"Big Sam and his 6ft 6” stature was always the biggest presence in the room. He cared deeply for his friends and colleagues.

"He possessed many admirable qualities that made him an exemplary member of the team and above all a fierce friend. We will miss this unreserved gentleman so much.

"We love you so much and are bereft of words to describe the tragedy that has befallen you, your family and friends. Our thoughts rest solely with you at this time.

It is understood that specialist officers from Northumbria Police are continuing to work with and support Sam’s family at this difficult time.
