Man arrested after a crash in Washington leaves 29-year-old with life-threatening injuries

Police are urging witnesses of a one-vehicle collision in Washington to come forward after a man was left in a critical condition.

Officers received a report at around 4.40pm on Sunday, June 20, that a silver Ford Mondeo had been travelling east on Sulgrave Road when the car left the road and collided with a tree.

Emergency services attended and a 29-year-old man, who was a passenger in the car, was taken to hospital with serious, life-threatening injuries – with the cause of the collision yet to be established.

Following the incident, an investigation has been launched and Sergeant Matt Sykes from Northumbria Police’s Motor Patrols department is now asking for any witnesses to come forward.

He said: “This was a very serious incident which has left a 29-year-old man in a critical condition.

"The road was closed in both directions for a number of hours to allow for a thorough clean up and forensic investigation.

“An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision is ongoing and we have already spoken to a number of witnesses who remained at the scene.

“However we are keen to hear from anyone else who saw what happened.

"There was a large crowd of people at the scene of the collision and we would urge anyone who has not yet spoken to police to get in touch.

"This is so we can build up a clear picture of the moments which led up to this incident.

“The collision occurred at about 4.35pm so if you were near to Sulgrave Road at that time of the collision, or saw the vehicle before or after this time, please get in touch with us.

"We are especially interested in hearing from any motorists that may have dash-cam footage.”

Anyone with information relating to the crash is asked to contact officers by calling 101 or by using the ‘Tell Us Something’ page on the Northumbria Police website, quoting log number 764 20/06/21.
