Rothbury man creates magnificent snow sculpture tribute to Captain Sir Tom Moore in Northumberland

Reg Warnes decided to celebrate the life of the 100-year-old former British Army officer turned fundraiser and national hero, who died last week after testing positive for Covid-19.

“He was the heartbeat of the country, bless him, so I decided I’d do something as a mark of respect,” said Reg.

The snowman has already attracted thousands of views and many kind comments on social media.

"I’m gob-smacked by the response, completely over the moon,” said Reg. “I wanted to do it for a bit of fun as I’d never tried to do a snow sculpture before so I’m pleased people seem to like it.”

The sculpture, which took four hours to complete, now has pride of place in Reg’s back garden looking out over the town.

"I started at 10am this morning and it took four hours,” said Reg. “I started off by getting a block of snow and then just thought I’d make a start. It turns out it was quite hard work!”

It comes complete with a tiny British Bulldog and a line of pebbles marking out Sir Tom’s name.

"I added that because I felt he was like the leader of the country,” said Reg.

He also did a David Bowie musical tribute to Captain Sir Tom on his Facebook page last week.

Reg also created a tribute to Ashington-born football legend Jack Charlton when he died last summer.
