Motorists experience heavy delays after two vans and a car crash on A19 near Sunderland

Rush hour traffic suffered heavy delays on the A19 after two vans and a car were involved in a crash.

At 5.34pm on Tuesday, January 21, Northumbria Police were called to reports of a multi-vehicle crash on the A19 near the A183 to Sunderland in the northbound direction.

Highways England and police officers were sent to the scene where two lanes were blocked.

Drivers experienced delays as the officers worked to recover the vehicles.

At around 6.25pm, Highways England confirmed that motorists were stuck in 3.5 miles of congestion, adding around 30 minutes to the usual journey time.

Thankfully, no one was seriously hurt as a result of the crash.

A spokesman for Northumbria Police said: “The incident was damage only and the road was blocked while the vehicles were recovered.”

At around 6.50pm, the road was clear but delays remained in the area for some time after.
