Coronavirus: Sunderland AFC fans urged to continue foodbank donations to help during COVID-19 outbreak

A Sunderland AFC fans’ group is urging supporters to help a foodbank in the city as the impact of the coronavirus continues.

Red and White Army (RAWA) helped set up a successful collection point at designated fixtures during the 2018/2019 season which have continued this season thanks to the generosity of fans.

But with all matches postponed until the end of April at least, the group is calling on supporters to continue to help the Sunderland Foodbank, which has seen usage double in the past four days as the economic impact of the coronavirus outbreak hits many of the people in most need across the region.

RAWA chairman Andrew Hird said the response to the scheme had been fantastic and hoped it would continue.

He added: “Since we launched the partnership with the Foodbank, Sunderland fans have been so generous.

“But if you can spare the time or the money, if you have a car and can help with pick-ups and drop-offs, you can make such a difference.

“The amazing staff and volunteers at the Foodbank are starting to feel the strain.

“If you’re healthy, not classed as vulnerable or susceptible to COVID-19, please do what you can.”
