Here's what I thought of a 'Marmite' gig at The Fire Station

Rob Mason tastes some Halloween ‘Marmite’ at a tribute gig.

Pink Floyd are an acquired taste. People tend to love them or not get them at all.

Take Saturday night at The Fire Station. On my left, a lone woman in a seemingly trance like state, was absolutely loving every minute of the excellent Floyd Effect, constantly swaying with the music while her face resembled the sort of transcendental state I’ve only previously witnessed in a religious setting.

On my right, my wife was nodding off despite the considerable volume emanating from the stage.

For me, I have to admit I found much of the first half dull after the opener, Shine On, You Crazy Diamond.

However, after the break the playing of the entire masterpiece Dark Side of the Moon was majestic.

I last heard this performed while lying on my back in a planetarium in Scotland, and here, with a spectacular laser and light show, it was just as atmospheric and I felt my better half was missing out as The Floyd Effect climaxed with Brain Damage and Eclipse.

Led by the enthusiastic Dale Taylor, The Floyd Effect showed themselves to be technically accomplished although at times the backing singers could have done with being a bit louder, as sometimes I could barely hear them above the instrumentation.

This was certainly not the case when The Floydettes excelled themselves with the soaring and beautiful vocals of The Great Gig in the Sky.

All in all this was a great gig if you were a Floyd aficionado, but if not then at least you were Comfortably Numb.
