Bird watchers flock to Souter Lighthouse after nearby sighting of bird the Booted Warbler

Bird watchers gathered in their dozens in the grassland near to the Souter Lighthouse car park, in South Tyneside, following reported sightings of a bird called the Booted Warbler.

South Tyneside residents have said that from early as 10am on Sunday, August 30, around 30 people had already travelled to the area in the hope of spotting the interesting bird.

More bird watchers were reported to have arrived later in the day after news of the bird in area spread among bird watching groups.

The bird watchers had set up watch posts in the grass area south of the car park next to Souter Lighthouse.

According to bird expert, Birdguides.com, the Booted Warbler is a busy and characterful warbler with structural features such as a square tail and hefty, strongly curled claws.The expert site said that bird watchers hoping to see a Booted Warbler in Britain are in with a good shout on the east coast and Northern Isles between mid-August and the end of October, although the best opportunities are in September.
