Now officers from Northumbria Police have appealed for any witnesses to the incident to come forward and assist in their investigation.

Emergency services were called to Backhouse Park in Ashbrooke on Monday afternoon, June 8.

A force spokesperson said: "Shortly after 2.30pm on Monday, we received a report of an assault at Backhouse Park, Ryhope Road, Sunderland.

"Officers and emergency services attended and the victim was taken to hospital to be checked over.

“Enquires are on-going and anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101, quoting log 615 070621, or via our website.”

A North East Ambulance Service spokeswoman confirmed the service had attended and transported one person to hospital: “We were called at 2.35pm to a report of a person injured in Backhouse Park in Ashbrooke.

"We dispatched one ambulance and transported the patient to Sunderland Royal Hospital.”
