Brute warned 'you were lucky I didn't kill you' after shocking attack on ex partner
A brute warned "you were lucky I didn't kill you" after a shocking attack on his ex partner.
Jordan Canavan confronted the victim and accused her of cheating on him, despite them having broken up weeks earlier.Newcastle Crown Court heard he then "lost his temper", threw hard punches at her head, put his hands around her neck and left her injured and in fear.
Prosecutor Liam O'Brien told the court the victim had reminded Canavan they were no longer in a relationship when he accused her of cheating, told him she had not been seeing anyone else then left the room.
Mr O'Brien told the court: "She was followed by the defendant. He began to punch her using clenched fists to strike her head, delivering what the complainant described as hard blows which caused significant pain."She tried to kick him to get away.
"At that point the defendant began to place both hands around the complainant's neck, as if strangling her and he punched him to get him off her.
"She broke free and tried to run away from the defendant but she was unable to do so because he grabbed her and pulled her back towards him.
"That caused her to fall and hit her head on a radiator which caused a wound to the rear of her head."The court heard the woman eventually managed to run and Canavan shouted as she left: "You were lucky I didn't kill you".
She was left bruised, sore and had a wound to her head.
In an impact statement she said the attack left her scared, damaged her trust and added: "He is a disgusting person."
Canavan, 36, of Colstream Avenue, Sunderland, admitted assault.
The court heard he has never been in trouble before and confessed he had been drinking heavily around that time, which he has since taken steps to address.
He is now in a settled relationship with someone else and has committed no further offences since the attack in November 2023.
Judge Julie Clemitson sentenced him to 19 months, suspended for two years, with programme and rehabilitation requirements as well as 120 hours unpaid work.
