New fish and chip restaurant opens in Sunderland offering gluten free food at regular prices
A new gluten free fish and chip restaurant has opened in Sunderland offering “gluten free food at the same price” as regular options.
The Fisherman’s Catch on Waverley Terrace has opened at the site of the old Pallion Social Club.

As well as offering everything you’d expect from a traditional fish and chip restaurant, the eatery also offers gluten free pizzas, burgers and an array of tasty desserts.
Owner Carol Harkus is passionate about promoting gluten free foods after experiencing the health benefits herself.
She said: “I have type 2 diabetes and since I started eating gluten free food - including fish and chips - the sugar and cholesterol levels in my blood have come right down.
“I also have some good friends who have a wheat intolerance and I wanted to ensure people can access tasty gluten free food options at a reasonable price.
“Gluten free batter is also much crispier and tastes better. Our fish and chip restaurant in South Shields came second in the Best UK Gluten Free Fish and Chip shop competition.
“We decided to move the restaurant to Sunderland as it was an opportunity to expand to a bigger premises.”
The restaurant is open every day from, apart from Monday, from 11am to 9pm. If you want to try gluten free food, then Carol offers a daily gluten free special for just £4.
The Fisherman’s Catch also has an alcohol licence and offers live music every Thursday.
Carol said: “A lot of our regular customers from South Shields now travel to Sunderland to get their fish and chips. We welcome anyone to come along and give gluten free food a try at the same price as regular fish and chips.”
You can find out more about what the restaurant has to offer on the Fisherman’s Catch Facebook page.
