Much-anticipated The Muddler no longer coming to Sunderland - here's why
It was one of the most-anticipated restaurant openings in the city - but The Muddler is no longer heading to Keel Square.
Back in 2023, it was announced that The Muddler, already popular at its Grey Street branch in Newcastle, would be heading to the prime corner unit in Keel Square.

It was set to fill the gap for a sushi offering in the city, as well as other pan-Asian dishes, and was being brought to the city by Danieli Group, who also own the popular STACK brand.
However, it’s been confirmed that the hospitality group will no longer be opening a new site at the development beneath Holiday Inn, which is already home to Flower Cafe, Keel Tavern and The Botanist.
There had already been speculation that the eatery wasn’t happening after no activity on the site, despite “coming soon” signage, and an announcement made in May 2025 that fit out works would be starting that month.
After being approached by the Echo, a Sunderland City Council spokesperson said: “The council has recently agreed to terminate an agreement for lease with Danieli Group in relation to the occupation of Unit 3, Keel Square, by The Muddler.
“We are currently in advanced discussions with an alternative operator and look forward to sharing further updates as and when appropriate.”
Neill Winch, CEO of STACK, said: “Unfortunately the rapid growth and demand for our STACK brand has meant that we have not been able to commit to our initial plan to open a branch of The Muddler in Sunderland.
“We have a number of proposed new STACK openings around the country this year and this is where we have had to channel our resources.”
It’s hoped a new operator for the prime site, which overlooks Culture House, will be announced soon.
Other new food and drink additions in Keel Square include Blacks Corner who will soon get the keys for their unit on the ground floor of Culture House
Home to the first cheese conveyor belt outside of London, it will have a seven day a week offering of coffees, breakfasts, small plates and more.
Culture House, a multi-purpose library, arts and culture space, is set to open its doors in late spring / early summer.
