Here’s a taster of new cafes and restaurants heading our way.

1. Slice, Roker Pier
There's been lots of interest in the transformation of the former Pier Fish and Chips into a flagship Slice. As with their other sites in Seaham and Sunderland city centre, you can expect pizza by the slice as well as 24in pizza to share. Drinks-wise, there's Wise Men Say on draft, frozen cocktails, wines and more. There's a soft opening from July 8, with a full opening from July 11. | Sunderland Echo
2. Thrive Play Cafe, Sunniside
A dedicated Play Cafe is one in a wave of activity in Sunniside. The finishing touches are being made to Thrive, a place where families can play and connect, at the unit in 29 Norfolk Street. It's set to open very soon. | Sunderland Echo

3. Varo Lounge, Keel Square
It's been announced that national hospitality group Loungers has submitted a licensing application to bring Varo Lounge to the final commercial unit in the development, joining The Botanist, Keel Tavern and Flower Cafe. Loungers has three brands: Lounge, Cosy Club and Brightside, with the Sunderland site being part of the Lounge group as Varo Lounge. The nearest in the Lounge group, and a flavour of what we could expect in Keel Square, is Cantoro Lounge at The Galleries in Washington. | Sunderland Echo

4. Chapter 13 bookshop and tearoom
A new bookshop and tearoom is heading to the city after transforming a unit in Frederick Street. Chapter 13 officially opens on Saturday, July 18. | Stock image
