Stephen Bryan and teenage son Alex raised £150 for NHS charities with a joint headshave in the front garden, immediately after the Clap for Carers initiative, which takes place each Thursday on 8pm.

The pair, from Town End Farm, braved the shave on Thursday, April 2 as the applause in the square where they live continued to ring out in honour of key workers.

Retired bus driver Stephen, 44, has recently registered with Sunderland City Council as a volunteer and hopes to organise a bigger fundraiser once coronavirus lockdown restrictions are lifted.

He told the Echo: “It felt great - there is so much negativity going around at the moment, it felt like this would bring a bit of joy to somebody.”
