The supermarket chain has extended it’s opening hours after they were shortened when the coronavirus lockdown measures were immediately imposed.

Asda still has priority times for NHS staff and safety measures to protect supermarket staff and customers following the coronavirus outbreak.

Last month, Prime Minister Boris Johnson put the UK on lockdown – and told the public they must not leave their homes other than for a handful of ‘essential’ reasons.

Asda, alongside other UK supermarkets, have put in place a number of safety measures and priority shopping times.

We take a look at the changes to the stores:

When is the priority shopping time for NHS staff?

Asda bosses announced they are offering priority access for NHS staff, care home workers and carers on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 8am-9am.

A spokesman said: “On these days we will be prioritising those key workers in our stores from 8am - 9am, so they can shop and get what they need. We will also be opening our stores on Sundays an hour earlier, exclusively for browsing, for these key workers.

“We ask NHS staff to please have their ID cards or registration numbers to hand and carers or care workers to bring either work ID or a letter from their employer, when they visit our stores at this time.”

What changes are Aldi implementing during the crisis?

Floor marking spaces which are two-metres apart are being put in place at checkouts, self-scan kiosks, pharmacy, optical and service desks.

Supermarket bosses have also announced that staff may limit the number of customers in the store at any one time to ensure shoppers can adhere to social distancing.

Asda staff working on checkout, home shopping, pharmacy and optical colleagues will be supplied with hand sanitiser. The checkout and home delivery colleagues will be provided gloves, and pharmacy and optical colleagues will also be provided with face masks.

Perspex screens have been put in place at checkouts and kiosks to protect staff.

What is Scan and Go and how is it helping with social distancing?

To help enable social distancing measures and help customers to shop contact free, Asda has extended Scan and Go mobile to all stores.

A spokesman for the supermarket said: “To use, simply download the app, and register your details to get started. Then bring your mobile to store and use the app to scan and pack items as you shop.

“There is no need to unpack and repack at checkout, and you can also keep a track of what you’re spending as you go.”
