Nissan unveils its future vision including 90% of vehicles with AI autonomous driving technology

Nissan has unveiled its strategy to harness the power of artificial intelligence (AI) to help drive its future vehicle production and driver experience.

The car manufacturing giant announced the plan at Nissan’s Vision event at the company’s global headquarters in Japan, confirming it plans to incorporate artificial intelligence (AI) into 90% of future vehicle models.

New models such as the Nissan Elgrand, scheduled for launch in summer 2026, will see the introduction of the next-generation ProPILOT system, Nissan’s AI drive technology focused on advancing autonomous driving.

Autonomous driving involves vehicles using sensors, AI, and cameras to perceive their surroundings and navigate without human intervention, aimed at increasing traffic safety and comfort.

Ivan Espinosa, Nissan president and CEO, said: “This is the right moment to articulate Nissan’s long‑term vision as we look beyond the Recovery Nissan plan and set a clear path for the future.

“Our vision defines where Nissan is headed, with customer experience as our guiding priority. By advancing mobility intelligence, we will deliver products and technologies that are safer, more intuitive and more accessible with outstanding value and a more rewarding overall experience.”

The ‘vision’ also unveiled Nissan will streamline its global line-up from 56 to 45 models, enabling “faster development” of retained and new models and the removal of “low-performing models”.

During the Vision event, Nissan chiefs also unveiled their new all-electric Juke model and confirmed it will be built at their Sunderland manufacturing plant, ensuring the city “remains the cornerstone of Nissan’s electrified manufacturing footprint in Europe”.

Employing over 6,000 people, Nissan Sunderland remains the city’s biggest employer.

Other new models unveiled at the event included the new X-Trail, Xterra, and Skyline.

Summing up the vision, Mr Espinosa added: “As we continue on our path to recovery, it is essential that Nissan demonstrates our relentless focus on serving the customer, seizing the opportunities provided by AI technologies, expanding electrification and driving innovation into our vehicles to deliver sustainable market growth.”

In May (2025) Nissan announced it would be reducing its international workforce by around 19,000 employees and reducing its number of global plants from 17 to 10 by 2027.

The new Juke model is set to start rolling off Nissan Sunderland’s production line in Spring 2027.
