Boost for city's workforce as Nissan unveils new all electric Juke model to be manufactured in Sunderland
Nissan has unveiled the all-new, all-electric Juke model and has confirmed the production of the cars will be at Nissan’s Sunderland Plant.
The move will continue to establish the city as the car manufacturing giant’s European electric vehicle hub after production of Nissan’s third generation electric Leaf vehicle started to roll-off the Sunderland factory’s production line in December (2025).

The news will be welcomed by Nissan Sunderland’s workforce and is a boost for the city’s economy after the company confirmed in May (2025) it would be reducing its international workforce by around 19,000 employees and reducing its number of global plants from 17 to 10 by 2027.
The new vehicle was unveiled at Nissan’s Vision event at the company’s global headquarters in Japan, “marking a major step forward in its electrification strategy in Europe”.

A Nissan spokesperson said: “The all-new, all-electric Juke will be built at Nissan’s Sunderland Plant in the UK, reinforcing the site’s central role in the company’s global EV strategy.
“Already home to Leaf and with the first trial phase of Juke production starting in the coming weeks, our Sunderland plant remains the cornerstone of Nissan’s electrified manufacturing footprint in Europe.
“The commitment is supported by Nissan’s broader regional capabilities, including its design, engineering and development network across the UK, Spain and Germany.
“Together, these operations underline Nissan’s long-term investment in Europe as both a production and innovation hub – designing, engineering and manufacturing vehicles in Europe, for European customers.”

The original petrol powered Juke was launched in 2010. The new 100% electric model is described as “retaining that character while introducing a fully electric powertrain, supporting Nissan’s journey towards to zero-emission mobility”.
Speaking at the unveiling of the launch and confirming Sunderland Nissan’s manufacturing role, Massimiliano Messina, Chairman of Nissan AMIEO (Africa, Middle East, India, Europe and Oceania), said: “Europe is central to Nissan’s electrification strategy, and we remain firmly committed to a fully electric future.
“With a rapidly expanding EV line-up, we are bringing greater choice and innovation to every segment, powered by our strong design, engineering and manufacturing footprint in the region. Together, this next generation of vehicles will accelerate our transition to zero-emission mobility.”
The new Juke model is et to start rolling off Nissan Sunderland’s production line in Spring 2027.
