Indoor go-karting centre plans approved for Sunderland ex-Debenhams site
Around 40 new jobs are set to be created at Sunderland’s long-vacant Debenhams store after plans to convert it into an indoor go-karting centre were given the go-ahead.
Plans submitted earlier this year aimed to redevelop the derelict former department store, which has been vacant since May 2021, and create a new family leisure hub in the heart of the city centre.
Floor plans show a restaurant area, “arcade zone” and bowling on the ground floor, a 16-kart track and restaurant area on the first floor, and a 16-kart track and ‘mini racers track’ on the second floor.
A covering letter added the former Debenhams unit is “no longer suited to modern retail requirements” and argued the “continued vacancy of such a prominent anchor unit adversely affects footfall, activity and the overall vitality of The Bridges Shopping Centre and the wider city centre”.
Those behind the scheme added the development would create around 40 full time equivalent jobs.
There was only one public objection to the plan during a consultation, which said Sunderland already had similar facilities and “does not require another.”
However, Sunderland City Council’s planning department found the plan acceptable and approved it on October 30, 2026.
Council planners said the potential noise from go-karting across the building’s upper floors was not likely to generate an “unacceptable adverse impact”.
It was also noted that the development is within the S2 City Centre parking zone where parking can be relaxed and officers added the plan would meet the council’s objective of boosting visitor numbers.
A previous supporting statement from applicants said the plan would have a “positive impact upon the vitality and viability of the shopping centre.”
A transport statement added existing access for people and cars would continue.
Under planning conditions, the development must start within three years.
