We're launching Mackem Community events at City Hall
The first event takes place this month.
“We are promoting the idea of ‘Active Citizenship’ which is encouraging residents to engage with services that may be able to support them, as well as making it easier for the community to help others,” say the organisers of a new Mackem Community initiative.
Visitors to the Mackem Community events, which are free to attend, will be able to access multiple agencies who offer support across the city, as well as donated clothing and toiletries.
The first event takes place at City Hall on September 8, between 10am – 3pm.

One of the organisers Brian Matandamanyoro said: “It’s a fantastic opportunity to have access to all these wonderful organisations at the same time whether you’re in need of help or want to get involved and give something back.
“Additionally, we will also be offering donated toiletries and clothing on the day alongside free refreshments to support the well-being of our community who are facing challenges.
“It would be great to have as many people there as possible whether you're able to just pop by for a coffee and find out a little more about the great services available and work being done within the city.
“We hope the event makes a difference to the lives of local residents by providing the essentials and helping to connect them with trusted partners.”
Agencies in attendance will be:

- The Community Shop
- Sunderland Learning, Skills & Employability Service
- Northumbrian Water
- FISCUS
- Utility Warehouse
- ASDA Boldon
- Gentoo
- Autss
- Citizens Advice
- Ocado Retail
Any donations of clothing, non-perishable food or toiletries are welcome and can be dropped off at The Beam (next door to City Hall).
Mackem Community is delivered by Nurture North C.I.C. in partnership with Knight Frank Promise, Atlas Cleaning and Sunderland City Council and sponsored by Karbon Homes, Ocado Retail and Hayes hygiene.
