RECAP: Amazing morning as Sunderland 10k and Sunderland half marathon events return to city

Hundreds of people have taken part in the Sunderland 10k and half marathon events as the city took a massive step towards a return normality.

Organisers pulled out all the stops to ensure the events could go ahead while remaining covid-secure.

  • The were the first road-closed mass participation events in the North East since the pandemic began

This is the tent set up ready to welcome back the runners after the #sunderlandcityruns half marathon.

It has seen almost a thousand people take part today, with 1,500 in the 10k. They followed on from 500 in the 5k and 250 in the BIG 3k last night.

Half marathon runners are coming over the finishing line in droves.

Among Fulwell neighbours and Sunderland Harriers members Paul Redman and Michelle Avery.

Michelle’s father-in-law Ron, 71, is due in soon. They said it was great to see people out cheering them on.

Brothers Nathan and Luke Outhwaite have been running today in memory of their uncle Kevin.

Since he died 12 years ago, their family has raised around £100,000 for the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation through various events.

Now they’re in training for the Great North Run to raise even more.

Shout out to the Jarrow and Hebburn AC members out today - there’s about 20 who signed up.

Coach Michael McNally said it has been “absolutely brilliant” with many getting PBs. They had lots of praise for the organisers who made everything run smoothly.
