RECAP: Amazing morning as Sunderland 10k and Sunderland half marathon events return to city

Hundreds of people have taken part in the Sunderland 10k and half marathon events as the city took a massive step towards a return normality.

Organisers pulled out all the stops to ensure the events could go ahead while remaining covid-secure.

Before the half marathon began, we caught up with Carl Donkin and his 4Louis team. They are running in memory of his son Harrison. It’s the latest in a long line of events he’s joined in to raise funds - now with his mates too.

Running the half today for St Benedict’s Hospice today is

He said: “It feels great to be back, that adrenaline feeling, and despite all the coronavirus restrictions, it doesn’t feel too different and there’s still a carnival atmosphere, it’s great to see some familiar faces.”

This group of Sunderland Strollers members are around 50 from the club to be taking part today.

They say it’s great to be back at an organised event and loved how people turned out to cheer everyone on.

Here are Jessica Clark-Barkess, who ran for 4Louis in memory of daughter Luna, Lucy Gash and Sarah Gill, who ran for St Benedict’s Hospice in memory of her dad John Dugdale.

They finished the 10k in 1hr 8min, a good training session for their Great North Run.
