From Christmas crafts and seasonal shows to a pop-up skating rink and ice festival, here’s a round-up of events happening in and around the city.
5. Lapland Adventure VR ride
The Bridges is hosting a Lapland Adventure VR ride in the unit near the old Starbucks. It runs every Saturday and Sunday until 17 December, after which it will be open daily from 18 December to the 5 January. Passengers take a ride through Lapland, travel around a frozen lake and then through Santa’s workshop – making it an exciting and memorable festive experience.

6. Sunniside food market
The Local Heroes food market returns to Sunniside Gardens on December 17 from 10am to 4pm - with a festive twist. They'll be showcasing the best of Sunderland's independent food and drink businesses alongside your Local Heroes NE favourites from Jesmond and Hebburn New Town food markets. Photo: collage
7. Christmas films marathon, The Fire Station
The Fire Station is hosting a two-day movie marathon of the very best Christmas films on Wednesday, December 27 and Thursday, December 28. You might have seen them before, but there's nothing like seeing a film on the big screen and there is something for everyone in the eight-film offer, from family favourites like Home Alone, Elf and The Polar Express, to romcom The Holiday to movies with more mature themes like Die Hard and The Shining. 8. Santa's Grotto, The Bridges
The ever-popular Christmas grotto is back at The Bridges with a brand new look for 2023, with children being transported to Santa’s Ice Castle. Entry is £2.50 and proceeds go to local good causes. Photo: Tim Richardson
