It's been announced that Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War's Nuketown '84 map will launch alongside an update today (24 November).

Nuketown is a multiplayer map that’s been featured in Call of Duty's Black Ops strand of games ever since the first one was released a decade ago.

New titles in the sub-franchise have brought them re-imagined takes on the classic map, which started life based as a typical mock-1950s US suburb used to demonstrate the effects of nuclear weapons.

Mannequins and building facades have appeared in each iteration of the play space, and at the end of every game, a nuclear bomb goes off.

What is Nuketown ‘84?

The latest version of the map is Nuketown ‘84, a 1980s take on the concept, which is actually set at a ‘sister site’ to the original Nuketown.

"We wanted to flip it on its head from some of the last things that we've done in the last iterations, because we know player expectations are high," said the game’s creative specialist Miles Leslie.

He added that Nuketown '84 has been “decommissioned and abandoned for 30 years", and is the sort of place that “travellers and people that want to escape come, and they're escaping that harsh world, that backdrop of the Cold War."

"And it feels like a really big refresh. One of the big challenges we've got is making it feel fresh and new in every single game, because this is something we take very seriously."

Nuketown has always been one of the smallest multiplayer maps in Call of Duty history, making for intense, fast-paced firefights.

The development team wanted the new map to feel “fresh and new in every single game”, but Leslie notes that “all of the fun engagements and stuff that people love is all maintained, but warped into this new idea of this site B.”

When can I get the new map?

It's been confirmed by Activision that the Nuketown ‘84 map will be available from 6pm UK time on Tuesday 24 November.

The map will be completely free to all Black Ops Cold War players, who can also get their hands on the Nuketown '84 Weapons Bundle.

That bundle is similarly free, and can be claimed by logging in to the game between now and Friday 4 December.

It contains a brand new 'Last Stop' Epic Shotgun Blueprint, six weapon charms, a 'Test Subjects' sticker, and more.

When is Season 7 of Warzone released?

Since the recent release of Black Ops Cold War, that game is now the Call of Duty’s franchise's focus, meaning last year's Modern Warfare takes a back seat.

But what of Warzone, the popular Battle Royale mode that is considered part of Modern Warfare, but is also available to players as a standalone experience – how does the new game affect Season 7?

At the time of writing, there doesn’t appear to be a confirmed release date for Season 7, and it could be that there won’t be a seventh season at all.

But don’t worry; the mode has proven extremely popular, so it could be that fans are getting a second Season 1 to tie in with the Cold War trappings of the new Black Ops game.

This would probably work in much the same way as Fortnite’s Chapter 2 did, with a major overhaul of the game’s map and an addition of many new features, but so far nothing has been confirmed.

But what about December 10?

Confusingly December 10 marks the beginning of Season 1 for Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, so it could be that Warzon’s next phase begins then too.

When it does, Activision has confirmed that in-game content will be shared across Modern Warfare, Warzone, and Black Ops Cold War.

That means player and Battle Pass progressions will be shared across the games.
