Though Tony Mowbray still has a number of selection issues in terms of both injury and suspension, his options are steadily improving.
So what’s his strongest XI for the trip to Stoke, and how might that change in the big games that follow? And perhaps an even bigger question as that squad depth improves, who is set to return to the bench and who might miss out as a result?
17. SUB - ABDOULLAH BA
As mentioned earlier, Ba might well feel he deserves the chance to continue on the right and he may well get that opportunity. Is enjoying a good campaign so far and will get plenty of chances to build on it. Photo: Frank Reid
18. SUB - CHRIS RIGG
Dennis Cirkin was pictured in training last week, which is a very welcome development. Mowbray had initially expected the defender to be back later this month, which means it still seems unlikely he’ll be in the squad this weekend. That will likely mean Rigg gets another chance as he continues to impress behind the scenes, and gives Mowbray another option in central midfield which is currently very light with Neil suspended. 19. SUB - LUIS HEMIR
Mowbray is confident that Hemir will offer a lot in the long run, a good finisher and a genuine penalty-box threat in the air. That means he is keen to have him on the bench where possible, as that could be vital late in games. Competition is increasingly fierce, though, with Rigg making a strong impression and Eliezer Mayenda now very close to being able to make his debut. Photo: Frank Reid
20. SUB - ADIL AOUCHICHE
Aouchiche has settled well at Sunderland, and has looked a really good player for the level when coming off the bench so far. In theory he ought to be very close to a first start, though there’s a lot of players now fit and available in his position. Photo: Frank Reid
