Though Tony Mowbray still has a number of selection issues in terms of both injury and suspension, his options are steadily improving.
So what’s his strongest XI for the trip to Stoke, and how might that change in the big games that follow? And perhaps an even bigger question as that squad depth improves, who is set to return to the bench and who might miss out as a result?
13. SUB - AJI ALESE
Mowbray will be very keen to get Alese into the squad, given how impressive the defender was in his first season of senior football. The defender will gradually be introduced from the bench as he builds match fitness, and his versatility will make him a particularly welcome addition. He can cover at centre half, at left back, and is perfect if circumstances require Mowbray to shift to a back three within a game. Photo: Frank Reid
14. SUB - JENSON SEELT
Seelt should be better for his extended appearance against Middlesbrough, and looks to be the next in line after Ballard and O’Nien as it stands. Is clearly comfortable playing off the right, which boosts his chances of staying in the squad. Timothée Pembélé will add competition when fully fit but that still seems at least a couple of weeks off yet. Photo: Frank Reid
15. BRADLEY DACK
Sunderland have carefully managed Dack through a hamstring injury over the last month, targeting this international break as a good opportunity to build him up to full speed. He’ll likely be back in the squad, adding more goal threat to the squad. Photo: FRANK REID 2022
16. SUB - NAZARIY RUSYN
Rusyn has looked lively in his cameo appearances so far and is clearly a threat driving infield from the left flank. For the moment he looks to be slightly ahead of Jewison Bennette in Mowbray’s thoughts, particularly as he can also play through the middle. Expect to see a lot more of Rusyn in the weeks ahead.
