Tom Burwell and Florent Ghisolfi’s classy Sunderland fans message revealed after historic season
Sunderland supporter groups and partners received a special message after the Black Cats’ historic season
Tom Burwell and Florent Ghisolfi have sent a classy message to Sunderland supporter groups, partners and media organisations after the club’s historic Premier League season.
The Black Cats secured European football for the first time since 1973-74 after finishing seventh in the Premier League, completing a remarkable rise from League One to the Europa League in just four years.
The achievement sparked emotional scenes at the Stadium of Light after Sunderland’s final-day win over Chelsea, with players, staff, supporters and members of the club’s ownership group all celebrating one of the most significant moments in the club’s modern history.
Now Sunderland have marked the achievement by sending out a message of thanks to staff, business partners, clients, supporter groups and partners across the region. The letter, signed by CEO Burwell and director of football Ghisolfi, was shared online by Roker Report, with other fan groups and media partners also understood to have received the same gesture.

The message, shared by Roker Report, read: “To our staff, business partners and clients, supporter groups, and partners across the region - thank you for the incredible support you have shown throughout this remarkable season. Together, we have achieved something truly special. Qualification for European competition is a proud milestone for everyone connected with Sunderland AFC. It has only been possible because of the hard work, belief and passion shown across the club, throughout the city, and within our wider community.
“From those working tirelessly behind the scenes, to the supporters in the stands, to our partners across the region, every contribution has helped drive Sunderland forward. This season has demonstrated what can be achieved when a club, a city and its people come together with belief, unity and ambition. We are immensely grateful for your continued commitment and look forward to the exciting journey ahead. Thank you for being part of this special chapter in Sunderland AFC’s story. This is just the beginning.”
Having only returned to the Premier League via the Championship play-offs, Régis Le Bris’ side were widely expected to be involved in a survival battle. Instead, they finished in the top seven, qualified for the Europa League and gave supporters one of the great modern Stadium of Light campaigns.
