Former Sunderland boss Sam Allardyce has delivered his verdict on the sacking of Phil Parkinson, and his replacement Lee Johnson.

Parkinson was sacked following a draw against Joey Barton’s Fleetwood Town, prompting the club’s hierarchy to turn towards former Bristol City boss Johnson.

Despite only being appointed on Saturday, the 39-year-old was on the touchline later that afternoon as Sunderland lost by a goal to bottom club Wigan Athletic in League One.

“It’s a big decision, Allardyce said on Quest of Johnson taking the team on Saturday. “Personally, it wouldn't be my choice.

"I would be sat in the stands, making notes on what I was actually seeing, what I was actually watching to get a better picture of what I needed to do.

“Of course, Sunderland is a massive job for Lee and previous managers since I’ve left have usually found it difficult to manage that football club.

“I have to say I was a little shocked that Gary Parkinson left, sorry Phil Parkinson left because I thought he was doing a reasonable job but this one is a big one for Lee.

“When the fans get back as well, they will get right behind him, so it’s a big challenge for him and the players to get Sunderland back in at least the Championship.”

The loss against the Latics leaves the Black Cats without a win in seven in all competitions and sitting ninth in League One, eight points off the automatic promotion places.
