Johnson is eyeing new additions during the month-long window, with attacking reinforcements believed to be top of his list.
Sunderland are also seeking another option at left-back following an injury setback for Denver Hume, while we could also see outgoings before the month is out.
A number of rumoured targets have already come and gone this month, with Carl Winchester the only player to have arrived on Wearside thus far during the month.
But he’s unlikely to be the last face through the door with Johnson still optimistic that he will land his desired targets before the February 1 deadline.
And this is how Sunderland’s team could look at the end of the window if the rumours are to be believed – scroll down to have a look:
1. GK: Lee Burge
The stopper has emerged as Sunderland's number one this term and that looks set to continue - with Lee Johnson unlikely to target a new goalkeeper during January. Photo: FRANK REID 2020
2. RB: Max Power
The Sunderland skipper has flourished since making the switch to full-back and looks set to continue in that position moving forward - despite the return of Luke O'Nien to the fold, and the presence of Dion Sanderson in the squad. Photo: FRANK REID 2020
3. CB: Bailey Wright
A regular in the Sunderland backline this season, Wright's run in the side doesn't look set to stop soon. And, with the Black Cats possessing plenty of depth at the back, it's unlikely Johnson will bring in any fresh competition for Wright during this window. Photo: Frank Reid
4. CB: Jordan Willis
While the centre half may need to be nursed through the rest of the campaign given the niggly injury which has plagued his season, there is no doubt that Sunderland look a stronger defensive unit with Willis at the heart of the backline. Photo: FRANK REID 2020
