It’s three years to the day since Sunderland broke their Wembley hoodoo to beat Tranmere Rovers in the Papa Johns Trophy final - but what has happened to the players who featured?
Lynden Gooch scored the only goal of the match in the 57th minute, latching onto Aiden McGeady’s pass, as the fixture was played behind closed doors due to Covid-19 restrictions. It was the first time the Black Cats had won at Wembley since the 1973 FA Cup final.
Here’s are the players who played that day and what has happened to them since:

9. LW: Aiden McGeady
McGeady joined SPL side Hibernian after leaving Sunderland in 2022, yet his spell at Easter Road was blighted by injuries. The winger, now 37, then signed a two-year contract at Scottish Championship club Ayr United last summer, where he’s made 14 league appearances. Photo: JPI Media

10. CAM: Lynden Gooch
Gooch left Sunderland after over a decade at the club last summer, when he joined Stoke City on a two-year deal. The 28-year-old has made 30 Championship appearances for the Potters in multiple positions this term. Photo: JPI Media

11. ST: Charlie Wyke
After suffering a cardiac arrest while training with Wigan in November 2021, Wyke returned to action at the start of last season. Now 31, the striker signed for Rotherham on loan in January and has made seven Championship appearances for the Millers. Photo: National World

12. SUB: Conor McLaughlin
McLaughlin spent half a season at Fleetwood in League One, after leaving Sunderland in 2021. The defender then retired from football and works as an emerging talent scouting manager for the City Football Group. Photo: JPI Media
