It’s three years to the day since Sunderland broke their Wembley hoodoo to beat Tranmere Rovers in the Papa Johns Trophy final - but what has happened to the players who featured?
Lynden Gooch scored the only goal of the match in the 57th minute, latching onto Aiden McGeady’s pass, as the fixture was played behind closed doors due to Covid-19 restrictions. It was the first time the Black Cats had won at Wembley since the 1973 FA Cup final.

5. LB: Callum McFadzean
Following his year at Sunderland, McFadzean had a short spell at Crewe, before joining Wrexham in the National League. The 30-year-old hasn’t featured in League Two since Wrexham’s promotion to the fourth tier. Photo: Stu Forster
6. CM: Josh Scowen
Scowen re-joined Wycome in League One after leaving Sunderland in 2021. The 30-year-old has been a regular starter for the Chairboys over the last three seasons. Photo: Pete Norton
7. CM: Grant Leadbitter
Leadbitter retired from football at the end of the 2021/22 season and took up an academy role at former club Middlesbrough in 2022. The 38-year-old is now working with the first-team coaching staff at the Riverside. Photo: JPI Media
8. RW: Chris Maguire
After spells at Lincoln and Ayr United, Maguire joined National League club Eastleigh at the start of this season, owned by former Sunderland chairman Stewart Donald. Maguire, now 35, has scored eight goals in 34 league appearances for the Spitfires this term. Photo: JPI Media
