A Wembley final provided a memorable weekend for the club last time out but the immense pressure to win promotion supercedes anything else. As such, you can expect to see a number of the club’s younger players handed an opportunity to impress, starting when Grimsby Town visit the Stadium of Light on Tuesday night. Nevertheless, the competition’s selection rules will necessitate the involvement of some senior players. And with the Black Cats set to go into a long break before the Wycombe game, it’s a valuable chance for Jack Ross to top up some of his player’s match fitness. Here’s who you can expect to see in action...
9. Bali Mumba
Another option on the right, of course, is talented youngster Bali Mumba. Ross has urged him to nail down a position in the U23 set up he missed the chance to play in last season. Interestingly, most of his minutes have come at right back and while he struggled against Middlesbrough on Joel Lynch and Laurens De Bock's debut, he has generally impressed. In midfield, he has wonderful quality and natural talent but has been urged to learn more about what's required off the ball. Either way, this competition hands him a potentially big opportunity. 10. Cieran Dunne
One of the few U23 regulars not involved in last night's 0-0 draw with Huddersfield was summer signing Cieran Dunne. The versatile forward signed from Falkirk in the summer and has made an impression so far this season, showing pace and a direct style. Photo: FRANK REID
11. And one who most likely won't....
One of the big beneficiaries of this competition last year, Benji Kimpioka has been called up to the Sweden U21 squad as his contract standoff continues. The squad are due to meet up today, which makes it seem unlikely that he will be able to feature, unless a late departure has been agreed. Photo: Ian Horrocks
