A Wembley final provided a memorable weekend for the club last time out but the immense pressure to win promotion supercedes anything else. As such, you can expect to see a number of the club’s younger players handed an opportunity to impress, starting when Grimsby Town visit the Stadium of Light on Tuesday night. Nevertheless, the competition’s selection rules will necessitate the involvement of some senior players. And with the Black Cats set to go into a long break before the Wycombe game, it’s a valuable chance for Jack Ross to top up some of his player’s match fitness. Here’s who you can expect to see in action...
5. George Dobson
Moved himself firmly into his manager's thoughts with a sparkling cup display at Burnley earlier in the campaign and will have a big chance to do so again here. Handled pre-match duties superbly, underlining the maturity he has despite being only 21. His energy and drive can only help the side. Photo: FRANK REID 2019
6. Duncan Watmore
How Watmore fares will be one of the most closely observed stories on Tuesday night. Clearing a pre-season schedule was a massive hurdle overcome for the forward, only to be frustrated by a thigh problem. Ross remains convinced he can be a big player this season, and there's no doubting he brings something unique to a forward line that needs it. Tonight is an important first step ahead of the next few months that will be crucial for player and club. Photo: Ian Horrocks
7. Will Grigg
No international duties means Ross has the option of playing Grigg, who has only started two league games this season. The manager will have to weigh up whether a break or a chance to build confidence in front of goal is the best option. Photo: FRANK REID 2019
8. Brandon Taylor
Got the nod ahead of other defensive colleagues in the youth side to take a place on the bench for the trip to Sheffield United in the Carabao Cup, so has to be a contender for minutes here. With Tom Flanagan away alongside Conor McLaughlin, there is sure to be a berth at right-back to filled for this game. Jordan Hunter has made a big impression on loan at South Shields, but one of these youngsters could get the chance on the right. With Jack Bainbridge playing for the U23s on Monday night and Taylor not involved, he seems set to play some part. Photo: Frank Reid
