The Black Cats will return to League One action this weekend with supporters keen to see which – if any – of the shining lights from the defeats to Mansfield and Fleetwood will feature.
So who could be in contention, and who may have to wait for another chance? We take a look:
5. BRANDON TAYLOR
Taylor had somewhat been overtaken in the pecking order by Younger, but put in his best senior performance of the season against the Cod Army on Tuesday evening. He could well be utilised in the future cup games, too. VERDICT: May have to wait for another opportunity Photo: FRANK REID 2020
6. GEORGE DOBSON
Dobson didn’t fully seize his chance against Mansfield, but put in a far better display against Fleetwood Town - earning praise from manager Parkinson after the game. He’ll face tough competition to get into the side, but will no doubt be in the thoughts of the coaching staff ahead of the visit of MK Dons. VERDICT: In contention for MK Dons Photo: Frank Reid
7. JOSH HAWKES
There was a great deal of excitement around Hawkes given his fine form for the under-23 side this term, and he was impressive at Fleetwood. He is, however, fighting for a spot in a competitive area of the field and may have to wait for another opportunity in the cup competition. Expect him to continue catching the eye for Elliott Dickman’s side though. VERDICT: May have to wait for another opportunity Photo: FRANK REID 2020
8. ELLIOT EMBLETON
It was telling that even when Embleton was tiring at Fleetwood, in what was his first full senior game for 14 months, he was having an influence on the game with his delivery from wide areas and dead balls. He could really bring something different to this Sunderland side and should be involved against MK Dons - even if it’s from the bench. VERDICT: In contention for MK Dons Photo: FRANK REID 2020
