There are senior players in need of some gametime, which they will likely get against Mansfield Town.
With Sunderland already through in the Papa John’s Trophy, it’s likely that the trip to Fleetwood on Tuesday is when we will then see a host of exciting youngsters given a chance to shine.
Here’s who is line for a big chance to impress..
1. REMI MATTHEWS
Matthews has had an indifferent start to life on Wearside, clearly suffering from a lack of rhythm due to limited gametime.
Lee Burge is firmly established as number one for the forseeable future, but Parkinson will likely see this is a good opportunity to get Matthews valuable time on the pitch Photo: FRANK REID 2020
2. DION SANDERSON
The Wolves loanee impressed on his debut at Rochdale, coming through a defensive test and showing some good signs going forward.
Parkinson has proceeded with caution since then, as the youngster took a whack to the knee in the second half. He is fully fit now and with Sunderland managing Jordan Willis through to the MK Dons game, this is the ideal moment to get Sanderson fully up to speed both in terms of his match fitness and the tactical demands of the side. 3. CALLUM McFADZEAN
Only Lee Burge and Bailey Wright have played more minutes than Denver Hume this season. The 22-year-old has been one of the biggest positives of the campaign so far, and this seems a natural opportunity to give him a rest.
McFadzean was brought in to offer cover and competition, and the cup games offer a good chance to integrate him into the system.
McFadzean came through 45 minutes for the U23s last Friday as he build his match fitness. With the U23s playing again on Friday, it may be that the Papa John's Trophy game is the best option for bringing him in. Photo: Pete Norton
4. GEORGE DOBSON
Dobson was a regular in the first year of Parkinson's tenure, but a red card on the opening day of the season opened the door for Grant Leadbitter. Sunderland's club captain has been in imperious form ever since and has left Dobson with work to do to fight his way back into the side. The challenge is all the greater given Josh Scowen's strong showings slightly further forward, pressing with an energy similar to Dobson at his best.
Dobson looked understandably rusty on his return to the side at Rochdale, dropping out of the two squads since. He will be eager to impress should there be any injuries or suspensions on the horizon. Photo: FRANK REID 2020
