Sunderland were one of a number of sides to take a break this weekend due to international call-ups, but there were seven fixtures played across the division and some eye-catching results involving sides looking to challenge with the Black Cats at the top. Here, Phil Smith takes a look at the key winners and losers from the last couple of weeks, starting with the fifth matchday of the season, as Sunderland beat AFC Wimbledon 3-1….
13. 11. Burton Albion (No change)
Produced an excellent win against Bristol Rovers having had to defend for large spells of the second half, while a goalless draw with Shrewsbury kept them very much in the play-off hunt. Very well placed after six games. Photo: Clive Mason
14. 10. Rochdale (+4)
Rochdale impressed against Sunderland and were perhaps a touch unlucky to come ou ton the losing side, but responded well in getting a good draw against Blackpool. Went on to produce a comfortable win over Southend, scoring a team goal so good that it went viral on social media, drawing comparisons with Pep Guardiola. Brian Barry-Murphy is quickly becoming one the football league's most talked about coaches. Photo: George Wood
15. 9. Lincoln City (-4)
A very good win against Fleetwood came in between disappointing defeats to Doncaster Rovers and Wycombe Wanderers. An even bigger concern is the seemingly imminent departure of inspirational manager Danny Cowley to Huddersfield. Such is their squad strength now, they should be able to attract a high calibre replacement, but it is impossible to guess how they will react to losing the key figures in their rise up the divisions. 16. 8. Blackpool (-8)
Winless in four, with their very impressive momentum somewhat checked. Stunned by Coventry at the weekend having been 2-0 up, with Sullay Kaikai impressing again in scoring a brace. Draws against Portsmouth and Rochdale were far from poor results, so there will be no significant panic as Simon Grayson looks to get his side back on track. Still look very much play-off potential.
