9. James McFadden
While his time at Everton is remembered fondly, McFadden’s brief spell at Sunderland was a far less memorable affair. Signed by Martin O’Neill in a bid to ignite a struggling forward line, the Scot made just three appearances for the club. Photo: Stu Forster
Heralded as a future French international when he joined Sunderland from Le Havre in 2006, Mocquet failed to make a first-team appearance on Wearside and - after loan spells at Rochdale and Bury - was sold just a year after moving to England. Photo: Pete Norton
Swedish international Eriksson was coming towards the end of his career when he signed for Sunderland in 1997. He could only muster one Premier League appearance before heading to the USA to join the Tampa Bay Rowdies. Photo: Shaun Botterill
Once believed to be the next big thing in English football, Byfield joined Sunderland in 2004 - with Michael Proctor joining Rotherham United in a swap deal. The striker actually performed fairly well, scoring five times in 17 games under Mick McCarthy, but was allowed to join Gillingham just six months after signing for the Black Cats.
