From the bizarre to the brilliant, the Black Cats have brought a number of players into the Academy of Light on a temporary basis over the last few years.
We’ve rounded-up some of the more forgettable and fascinating names, but how many can you remember? Scroll down and click through the pages – and let us know if you saw any in action:
5. Chinedu Obasi
Obasi was part of the Nigeria squad at the 2014 World Cup, but just over a year later found himself on trial at Sunderland after becoming a free agent. He wasn't signed by Sam Allardyce and, after a spell with Swedish side AIK, is now without a club. Photo: PATRIK STOLLARZ
6. Charles N'Zogbia
The former Newcastle United midfielder rocked-up at Sunderland after leaving Aston Villa in 2016. He wasn't handed a deal, though, and subsequently retired from professional football. Photo: Cooper Neill
7. Stoppila Sunzu
It was March 2013 when Zambian centre back Sunzu arrived at the Academy of Light bidding to impress Martin O'Neill. While he couldn't earn a deal on Wearside, he went on to forge a strong career in France - and currently plays for Metz. Photo: JEAN-SEBASTIEN EVRARD
8. Cedric Bardon
Remember him? The French attacking midfielder played three games for Sunderland during their tour of the Netherlands in 2000. He couldn't win a contract though, and went on to spend his career in his homeland. Photo: AFP
